Playing Sport on Your Period: What athletes need to know

Playing sports as a woman can be difficult, especially if you don’t know how to go about it. According to a study conducted by a medical institution in Chicago, young females tend to drop out of sports after the age of fourteen. This is the age at which most girls begin their menstrual cycle. Most girls said that it was primarily due to the discomfort that menstruation comes with, and as a result, they chose to quit sports in order to avoid the discomforts.

However, girls should never have to give up sports because of their bodies; all they need is a better understanding of their bodies, which will allow them to participate in athletic activities as normal. In this article, we will discuss with you some of the things you should know about your body when you are a female athlete.

Playing sport on your period

Working-out

Most girls are can be concerned that their periods will interfere with their performance; however, the opposite may be true.

Working out or participating in athletic activities during your period has been scientifically proven to be one of the most effective ways to alleviate period discomfort. Body workouts have a significant effect on relieving cramps, fatigue, and improving your mood. According to medical experts, athletics can be their strongest during this time when they are on their period; all they need to do is push themselves to maximize their energy. However, it is important to listen to your body and to know the maximum limit it can take.

When you exercise, your body produces endorphins, which are natural pain relievers and euphoric chemicals. Your blood flow, combined with the increased endorphin levels in your body during workouts, improves your mood and energy levels.

Wearing the right gear

Wearing the proper gear during your period is also vital. However, it is more important to wear something that you are most comfortable in. From pads, tampons and cups, you can choose the one you are most comfortable with. However, tampons are mostly recommended for female athletes because they allow for complete flexibility with little to no risk of leaking.

Tampons

We would also like to point out here, that tampons are seriously not bad at all. The majority of people who complain about tampon discomfort do so because they do not wear them correctly. If it is properly inserted, you will not even feel it is there. We recommend that you use them when participating in sports while on your period, especially if you are a swimmer.

Wear Period Undies

Female athletes should also have period undies on hand. These undies are made to hold pads or tampons better than regular undies. They are also more absorbent than regular undies, so if your pad leaks, you won’t have to worry because they will keep the leak from getting to your clothes. You can jump, skip, bend, and run as much as you want in these undies because they are also designed to be flexible. Period underwear also has fancy anti-odour technology to keep you feeling and smelling fresh throughout your activities.

Nutritious Diet

Eating the right food during this time is significantly important. The first step is to drink plenty of water in order to stay hydrated. You don’t want to be drained out in the field during this time. Thus, stay hydrated. During this time, nitric oxide-rich foods such as beets, pomegranate, watermelon, and spinach are recommended. Iron-rich foods such as lean red meat and green leafy vegetables are also strongly advised. If you suffer from painful period cramps, a warm cup of ginger can help. Ginger contains anti-inflammatory properties that can help relieve pain.

Take supplements

As an athlete, supplements are also an important way to support your body during your menstruation cycle. During this time, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and iron supplements are recommended.

Conclusion

There is no reason for girls to stop participating in sports because of their monthly period. This can be a great time to get out on the field, court, stage, or track and work your magic. Nothing can stand in your way of reaching your athletic goals if you eat a well-balanced diet, stay hydrated, and use the proper gear.
